The provincial deputy for Architecture, Building Conservation and Facilities, Carmen Sellés, visited the rehabilitation works of the Roman Baths of Allon, an archaeological site dating from the end of the 1st century, which justifies the category of “municipium” of the city of Allon.

Mayor Marcos Zaragoza and members of the municipal Corporation accompanied the provincial deputy on the visit, together with the chief architect of the Alicante Provincial Council, Rafael Pérez, and the head of the municipal archaeology and museum service, Antonio Espinosa.

The delegation checked the state of completion of the recently finished phases I and II works, which have consolidated the surroundings and intervened in the dividing walls. Phases I and II of the Thermal Baths Master Plan cost 187,343.71 euros, 50% of which was subsidised by the Alicante Provincial Council.

The municipal technicians also explained the characteristics of the recently initiated phase III, which consists of the construction of a 915 square metre roof, the structure of which will protect the site and recreate the volume. This recently initiated phase III has a budget of 1,115,042.98 euros and has a subsidy of 400,000 euros from the Provincial Council and 600,000 euros in European funds from the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations (PSTD). These works have a completion period of 6 months.

Mayor Marcos Zaragoza thanked the Alicante Provincial Council for its collaboration in this project to museumise the baths, as, in addition to being part of the Joint Monitoring Committee of the Agreement together with the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, MARQ, and Villajoyosa Town Council, it is subsidising a large part of the rehabilitation phases “which will allow us to enjoy a Roman monument that symbolises the importance of the city of Allon and which will be one of the key and emblematic spaces in Villajoyosa’s cultural corridor”.
